Sentrimax rebuilds decanter and tricanter centrifuge gearboxes at its Mansfield, TX, Edmonton, AB and Kitchener, ON facilities, covering planetary two- and three-stage designs, CYCLO cycloidal gearboxes, and hydraulic backdrives. Every gearbox repair includes full inspection, precision machining to OEM tolerances, dynamic balancing to ISO G 0.5, and a test run before it ships back.

Why the gearbox is the heart of a decanter centrifuge

A decanter centrifuge separates solids from liquid by spinning a bowl and an internal
scroll conveyor at high speed. The scroll has to rotate at a slightly different speed than
the bowl, and that differential — not the absolute rotor speed — is what pushes settled
solids along the bowl wall toward the discharge ports. The gearbox is the component that
creates and holds that differential under continuous load. If it cannot maintain the
correct differential, the machine either stops conveying solids or conveys them too
aggressively, overloading the scroll flights, the bowl bearings, and the seals on either
side of the gearbox itself.

Because the differential sits between two fast-rotating shafts, the gearbox absorbs
constant torque reversal, any contamination that gets past a failed seal, and heat
generated by its own internal friction. It is also one of the harder components to inspect
without pulling it off the machine, which is why gearbox wear is frequently diagnosed
late — by the time noise or vibration reaches the operator’s ear, internal wear is often
already advanced.

Gearbox types Sentrimax repairs

Not every decanter sets its differential speed the same way. Sentrimax repairs the
three architectures most commonly found in the field, and the right rebuild approach
depends on which one is installed.

Gearbox typeHow it sets differential speedWhat matters most in a rebuild
Planetary (2-stage)A single planetary gear set fixes the differential ratio mechanicallyVerifying the ratio is preserved exactly through re-machined or replaced gears
Planetary (3-stage)A second planetary stage extends the reduction range beyond what one stage can carryConfirming both stages are matched after individual component repair
CYCLO (cycloidal)An eccentric cycloidal disc drive replaces conventional involute gearingInspecting the cycloidal discs and pins for wear patterns unique to this drive type
Hydraulic backdriveA hydraulic motor applies and adjusts the differential torqueTesting the hydraulic circuit alongside the mechanical components

What a gearbox rebuild involves

A gearbox that comes into a Sentrimax facility follows the same documented process as
the rest of the centrifuge: full disassembly, an oil sample sent for third-party
analysis, and a detailed inspection of every gear, bearing, seal and shaft inside the
housing. Parts that are worn beyond a serviceable tolerance are replaced with components
built to meet or exceed OEM specifications; parts that can be salvaged are machined back
to those tolerances rather than replaced outright. Once the gearbox is reassembled, it
does not go back on the shelf as a standalone unit — it is balanced with the rotating
assembly to ISO G 0.5 and put through a test run as part of the centrifuge’s overall
commissioning, not tested in isolation.

This is one part of Sentrimax’s broader centrifuge repair
services
, which also cover the bowl, scroll, bearings, seals and controls that the
gearbox works alongside.

Reading the warning signs before the gearbox fails

Gearbox failure is rarely sudden. It usually announces itself first through a change in
noise or case temperature, then through backlash you can feel at the input shaft, and
finally through metal in the oil. Waiting past that point risks damage spreading from the
gearbox into the bowl and scroll assembly it drives. Our page on
centrifuge gearbox failure warning signs
walks through what to check and when continued operation stops being a reasonable
risk.

Choosing the right rebuild path

The rebuild scope differs meaningfully by gearbox type. If your unit is a two- or
three-stage planetary design, our planetary gearbox
rebuild page
covers what gets replaced versus re-machined and how the ratio is
verified before reassembly. If it is a cycloidal drive, see the
CYCLO gearbox service page for how that mechanism
differs from conventional gearing. If your decanter uses a hydraulic backdrive rather than
a fixed-ratio gearbox, the hydraulic backdrive
service page
explains when that design is preferable and what its own failure symptoms
look like.

Some gearbox problems can be assessed and corrected with the centrifuge still on site;
others require the unit to come into one of Sentrimax’s three facilities for full
disassembly, precision measurement and machine-shop work that a field crew cannot
perform. Which path applies depends on what the inspection finds, not on which is more
convenient to schedule.

What’s included on every gearbox job

Regardless of gearbox type, every job Sentrimax performs — gearbox repair included —
carries the same baseline: a fit evaluation confirming how the repaired or replaced
components actually sit against the mating parts, a detailed inspection report
documenting what was found and what was done about it, dynamic balancing of the
reassembled rotating assembly, and a test run before the unit ships. None of these are
priced as optional extras layered onto a base repair; they are how a gearbox repair is
verified before it goes back into service.

The three-stage process applied to a gearbox

A gearbox follows the same documented, ISO 9001:2015 process as the rest of the
centrifuge, adapted to its own components:

  1. Inspection et devis. The gearbox is tagged for triage, an oil
sample is pulled and sent for third-party analysis, and it is disassembled for a
licensed technician’s inspection. Critical precision fits — shaft-to-bearing bore, gear
mesh clearance, and similar dimensions specific to the gearbox type — are measured and
documented with annotated photos, feeding into a quotation package covering the full
scope, required parts, pricing and estimated delivery time.
  2. Réparation. Once approved, parts are assembled to a package meeting or
exceeding OEM specifications, any needed welding is completed, and machining brings
salvageable components back to OEM tolerances. The gearbox is reassembled with the
rotating assembly it drives, the full assembly is balanced up to ISO G 0.5, and a
technician completes a post-repair quality control inspection before a full test run
    avec un rapport de performance.
  3. Livraison. The repaired unit ships through a dedicated broker
network, with an invoice detailing all parts, labor and completed analyses, plus
    shipping confirmation and tracking.

Field visit or shop rebuild: how that decision gets made

Sentrimax has field service technicians and remote services available for
diagnostics, minor corrective work, and confirming whether a gearbox issue is something
that can be addressed without pulling the unit off the machine. But the measurements
and machine-shop capability that a genuine rebuild depends on — precision-grinding,
milling, lathe-turning, and dynamic balancing to ISO G 0.5 — exist at Sentrimax’s
facilities, not in a field toolbox. A field visit typically answers the question of
whether a shop rebuild is warranted; it is not usually a substitute for one once a
gearbox has reached the point of measurable wear.

Why brand doesn’t determine repairability

Sentrimax services centrifuges from all major manufacturers — Sharples, Flottweg,
Centrisys, Derrick, GEA, Alfa Laval, Tomoe, Andritz, Bird, Pieralisi and others — and
gearbox repair follows the same inspection-first approach regardless of which brand’s
centrifuge the gearbox came out of. Sentrimax is an independent MRO provider, not
affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any of these manufacturers; brand names
describe the equipment we service, not a partnership.

What determines how extensive a gearbox rebuild is

Two gearboxes with the same symptom on receipt can leave with very different repair
scopes. What determines the difference is what the inspection actually finds: whether
wear is limited to one or two components or has spread through the gear train and
bearings, whether the required parts are readily available or need to be machined from
scratch, and whether housing or shaft damage requires welding and re-machining rather
than straight component replacement. Sentrimax documents that scope in the quotation
package prepared after inspection, so the extent of the work is based on measured
condition rather than assumed from the symptom alone.

What to include when you contact us about a gearbox

A useful first inquiry does not need to be a formal quote request. The details that
speed up an accurate assessment are the gearbox type if you know it, the centrifuge make
and model it is installed on, and a plain description of what you are observing:

  • Gearbox type — planetary, CYCLO, or hydraulic backdrive — if it is known or visible
    on a nameplate
  • Centrifuge brand and model the gearbox is installed on
  • What changed and when — noise, heat, backlash, oil condition, or conveyance
    behavior
  • Whether the centrifuge is still running or has already been shut down
  • Any prior repair history on the gearbox, if available

None of this commits you to anything. It lets Sentrimax tell you, before the unit ever
ships, whether you are likely looking at a contained gearbox repair or something that has
already reached other components — and whether a field visit or a full shop inspection is
the right next step.

Foire aux questions

Can a centrifuge gearbox be repaired in the field, or does it need to come into a shop?

Some inspection and minor corrective work can happen on site, but a full gearbox rebuild — disassembly, precision measurement, machining and re-balancing with the rotating assembly — requires the unit to come into one of Sentrimax's three facilities. Whether a field visit is enough depends on what the initial inspection finds.

How do I know which type of gearbox is on my centrifuge?

The gearbox nameplate or the original equipment documentation will identify it as planetary, CYCLO, or hydraulic backdrive. If that information is missing, our technicians can identify the type during the initial inspection stage before any repair work begins.

Does a gearbox rebuild include re-balancing the rotating assembly?

Yes. Gearbox repair at Sentrimax is not treated as a standalone job — the gearbox is reassembled with the bowl and scroll it drives, the full rotating assembly is dynamically balanced to ISO G 0.5, and the unit is put through a test run before it ships.

What if the gearbox housing itself is cracked or damaged, not just the internal gears?

Housing damage is assessed during the inspection stage along with the internal components. Depending on the extent of the damage, repair may involve welding and machining the housing back to tolerance, or sourcing a replacement housing if the original cannot be restored to a serviceable condition.

What information do you need before quoting a gearbox rebuild?

The gearbox type (planetary, CYCLO or hydraulic backdrive), the centrifuge make and model it is installed on, and a description of the symptoms you are seeing — noise, heat, backlash, oil condition or conveyance problems. A physical inspection at receipt confirms the full scope.
